the official conference brochure for 4G World 2010.  With visionary keynotes

MOBILE INTERNET TRENDS
A CAUTIONARY TALE ON OPERATOR LED PAYMENT CONSORTIUMS

I have the strangest sense of deja vu all over again.

Today, Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile publicly announced a contactless payment 
consortium. It has no name, no CEO and no concrete details on cities of 
deployment, payment processor or, really much of anything. HOWEVER. It will use 
contactless (read NFC) technology to facilitate the payments and it may well 
bypass the traditional Visa and MasterCard duopoly. Intriguing.  So much so in 
fact that my colleague Andy Castonguay published a report on this very topic 
last month (available here).

WIMAX TRENDS:
WAC SETS OUT ANTI-BITPIPE CAMPAIGN, BUT VODAFONE GIVES UP ON CARRIER DEVICES

The Wholesale Applications Community (WAC), formed in February to spearhead the 
operators’ fightback against the bitpipe, has announced details of its formal 
organization and business model. The platform will incorporate the existing 
widgets-based framework created by an earlier carrier alliance, JIL (Joint 
Innovation Lab). Its plans show that operators will look to gain power by 
opening up a huge target user base, and value adding capabilities to 
developers, in order to compete with over-the-top brands. But they are going 
cold on the idea of controlling the user experience right down to the device 
and operating system.
