More info about the Sun Studio effort: We're currently planning to work on releasing our development bits of the tools and compilers as a first step through the Indiana depot. Doing so with the SS12 FCS bits has issues because they're not known to be redistributable yet, and that's one of the features of Indiana. I heard second hand talk about an alternate depot for non redistributable stuff, so that might be an option. As far as patch updates, we don't currently have any sort of "Freshbitting" process in place for our existing packages, (to release patched updates of FCS bits), so we can't leverage on top of that. So that's the status.
