I'd like feedback from the community about the following feature enhancement. The Update Center 2 team would provide the code enhancements to IPS, but we want some initial feedback on the requirement and the general approach before developing the initial code.
Thanks, Chris Background ========== Some of the Sun products include service tags technology that helps enable users to register instances of product installations with Sun. Users may be interested in registering in order to access value add services such as web-based inventory management. Each service tag includes an identifier of the product and a unique identifier of the particular instance of the product installation. Service tags and the unique identifiers are generated even if product registration never occurs. Short of users registering products, the presence of service tag information can help Sun and open source projects responsible for the binary distros to collect anonymous usage data that can be used as input into project and product decisions. Optional UUIDs in IPS Images ============================ When a product is installed in an IPS user image, the product owners are interested in providing even more value to users by associating the unique product installation instance identifier with the user image and all of the interaction between that image and the associated repositories. Based on this interest, our initial thought is that it would be useful for IPS to support an optional UUID on a per image basis that could be specified on the image-create command, added or modified after image-create and passed as part of the IPS client requests to the associated repositories. Back-end reporting tools would be able to correlate requests associated with the same UUID. If and when a user registers a product, the UUID and its traffic could be correlated with individual users and the resulting information could be fed back into value added or free services for users. There would be no hard linkage between IPS and the service tags technology. Products/projects would be responsible for supplying the UUIDs associated with their products as images are created and/or cloned. _______________________________________________ pkg-discuss mailing list [email protected] http://mail.opensolaris.org/mailman/listinfo/pkg-discuss
