Fair point. But should each application invent its own status reporting mechanism? Or should we provide a generic one? BTW and FWIW, I agree that many "upgrade" actions can be performed transparently by services without having to inform anyone. When we had to change idmapd(1M)'s DB schema we made it automatically upgrade its DB schema and content, without needing any SVR4 class action scripts, and we made it robust enough that noone should run into any problems. I just don't think that all upgrade considerations are that simple.
