Pretty simple stuff, and also cleans up (kind of) an ugly interface
boundary between the legacy action and the core code. Suggestions
on a cleaner way?
I also played with python's __slots__ feature as a way of reducing footprint,
but it's scary stuff, and so we should save it till we really need it.
