        I don't think everyone would want to share this data and many would 
probably prefer it be opt-in rather than needing to opt-out every system.

        I think trying to make a system that can gather data like previous 
version puts the interests of developers/distributors ahead of 
individual software consumers.  Certain consumers may want to share 
system status data with certain distributors but that can be done 
outside of the packaging system.

        I would hope there will be more pkg features like local mirroring, and 
package serialization which would make it hard to get this data.  (Would 
a site owned mirror really want to pass statistics back to a public server?)

        Additionally there are questions like how relevant this data is given 
virtualization/cloning (a single package update may correspond to large 
farms of running instances, another may be for analysis purposes and 
have no real running instances.)
