There are two problems here. 1) The packagemanager in the *original* 2008.05 release didn't work correctly for image-update, and other operations (I'm not sure if you have the "back to school" 2008.05 release). 2) To update from build 86, you have to follow a special set of steps (you can't use the gui): http://opensolaris.org/os/project/indiana/resources/relnotes/200805/image-update/ I would reinstall the system, and then try the update instructions above.
