bug 6602 Package Manager hangs when invalid repository information is
supplied
The fix adds a handler for Exception for all calls which may fail in
order to catch unexpected exceptions.
The call to self.__prepare_repository_list is omitted when an error
occurs as there is no need to update
the repository list.
There are also some minor formatting changes to ensure that the error
message is on a different line to the exception description.
