My understanding is if old software operates on a new image (modifying the cfg_cache file), it will delete the new information?
Is that right?

A more detailed summary of changes will be posted soon, for now it is suggested that you review the bugs mentioned above, and doc/client_api_versions.txt to find out what's changed.

Shawn,

Can you talk about what, if any, impact this will have if we
opt to backpublish these changes?

No impact is anticipated (other then the command names changing for authority, set-authority, and unset-authority as I already noted. Although even that will be mitigated by a forthcoming changeset for bug 7231).

I've already verified that the last backpublished version of SUNWipkg has no trouble reading the cfg_cache despite the addition of new values. I purposefully did not change the cfg_cache to say "publisher" (they still say authority) so that older clients could still read the most useful bits of information even if written by a newer client.

The new client can also display information about and manipulate older images without incident and will automatically translate authority to publisher where necessary.

I also did not change any of the command-line flags (-a, -f, etc.) or the format of the values.

From the information available to me, SUNWpython24-simplejson should also be able to be "back-published" without issue to older releases.

The one incompatibility between the new client and the old is that manifests written by the new client have "set name=publisher" instead of "set name=authority" and thus older clients will not have access to that information if manipulating an image created by the newer client.

Cheers,
