Hi Shawn,
Thanks for the info on the "repo-on-a-stick" project. I have some
questions about
the other things that will be done for off-line support.

The install team is planning to provide support to install from a IPS

We would like to get some information on when/how "offline IPS
support" will
be provided. Do you have any information I can look at to learn more
about this?
I'm sorry I hadn't had a chance to respond to your inquiry from this
morning yet, but, I'll assume this post is a continuation of that and
that you are inquiring about the "repo-on-a-stick" project.
I've attached the draft README which explains this media offering.
To expound a bit though, there are multiple things that could be
viewed as off-line support:
* a copy of the 2009.06 repository suitable for private networks or
"offline" usage (see above)
Looks like this is just to give users a pre-built repo so they don't
have to use the OpenSolaris provided
repo. From the user's point of view, they will still be going through
exactly the
same interface they do today when installing from our repo.
* The ability for the pkg(1) client to retrieve packages from a
repository on-disk (estimated to arrive late this year)
* The on-disk package format that pkg(5) will provide (estimated to
arrive late this year)
Do you anticipate any difference in interfaces from the user's point of
view when
the above 2 features are supported?
Currently, users must first specify a repo that he/she wants to install
packages from before installing
the packages. When on-disk support is implemented,
would they not have to specify the repo/publisher? Can they
simply specify in the FMRI that they are installing from something on-disk,
and pkg(1) client will directly install the package from disk?
Also, if they want to browse what's available on disk, will they have
to specify a repo?
What I am trying to find out is when users are able to install packages
from disk, would the installer need to provide any different functionalities
(different GUI screen...etc) than installing from a network repo.
Thanks,
--Karen
