It appears on a new install for *iso (in VirtualBox) of 118. Somehow
I've managed to hamstring myself with the package manager.

Publish is dev and it is preferred.

I've clicked a few items to upadate... hit `install/update' but I get
an error message that "select pkgs cannot be updated on there own.
And I'm told to "click `update all' button to update all packages".

The button is greyed out and inactive so cannot be `clicked'. Now
what?

I went to cmdline pkg image-update -v and am told there is nothing to update.
What packages are you attempting to install?

smbr smbrk cvs (there were more but as I scroll back thru `all
packages' I don't see anything checked so cannot tell what all I'd
selected)
Do you have the "opensolaris.org" publisher selected in the list box
in the upper right corner?

No... I have dev selected

File/manage repositories also shows both dev ahd opensolaris.org
listed and has dev as preferred.

What is the output of "pkg publisher" ?

PUBLISHER TYPE STATUS URI
dev (preferred) origin online
http://pkg.opensolaris.org/dev/
opensolaris.org origin online
http://pkg.opensolaris.org/dev/

Looks like there are two instances of dev

I'm removing the one I added now... seems to be taking a while

It's possible your setup was confusing the packagemanager.

In general, you should just have the 'opensolaris.org' publisher and point it at the /dev or /release repositories.

Let us know what the results are.

Cheers,
