Are any of the improvements possibly aimed at mmap'able database? I
believe this is the key to rpm's speed.

Improvements are always desired, but I don't have concrete plans at the moment. On x86, while search isn't as fast as it could be, remote search seems to perform ok, and be mostly limited to network speed. Local search could use some TLC, but it's a lot faster than it was a year ago. A large rewrite for performance is low on the priority list right now. As we always say, contributions or patches are more than welcome.

I'm not the search expert, so I can't say for certain. My understanding
was that we looked at existing database formats, but found that they
didn't provide the performance gains that we were expecting.

Just to be totally correct, I didn't look into database formats, I looked into existing search backends. We didn't find any at the time that met our needs. Next time search performance becomes a priority, or next time we're going to bump the version, I'll look around again and examine whether that's still the case. If anyone feels like performance testing various implementations, that would likely make a wholesale switch more likely to happen.
