The integration of the SAT solver to replace the current plan generator should significantly improve performance in most situations. The working set of large image-updates or installation of a very large number of packages is right now too large; bug 9388 - pkg image-update needs to cap memory usage was filed on this shortly after my first set of memory reduction changes...
