Could someone have a look at this proposed change to api.py as it causes
severe problems to the GUI?

As far as I can determine this bug is a regression caused by changes
to src/modules/client/api.py in revsion 1271.
The proposed fix attempts to ensure that the activity lock is always
released when an exception occurs.
