For those following at home :-) : After installing the versions of the
python2.6 packages that were closest to our OS (nevada 108), we were
successful and building the packages, installing and starting the
depots. We are looking at new hardware to be set up to run the latest
OpenSolaris to avoid these issues in the future.

In case anyone's wondering, the issue (resolved on IRC) was that the
SUNWopensslr on the system was built in February, and the SUNWPython26 on
the system was built in November 2009, against a later version of openssl,
so it depends on symbols that aren't in the installed version.
