I think there are two approaches to choosing the base names of packages.
It depends on whether you think Sun can create a sensible, comprehensive
arrangement of packages are will be easily understood to someone
who is not familiar with the UNIX OpenSource universe (Linux/BSD/etc).
If you think Sun can do this job effectively (let's call this the Apple
approach) then we should probably get some initial guidelines from a usability
expert.  Coming up with that set by crowd-consensus seems impractical.
The other approach is to choose names that are logical to the people who
create the packages, and logical to the existing users of those packages
(most of whom are using those packages on Linux).  If we take that approach
then I would say we should take our cue from the way the same packages
are named and organized in the popular Linux distributions.
Everything that I've said above applies ONLY to open source projects
that are NOT owned by Sun.  There's no reason for Sun to mimic anyone
else in the arrangement of SunOS packages, for example.
