A necesary evil, I would argue.  Being able to set PKG_IMAGE is very
useful for testing, and for any other situation where one wants to issue
a lot of package commands and not supply the -R option time after time.

It's quite possible to do any number of silly things if you're not
paying attention.  If you use a gas-powered weed eater and forget you're
wearing shorts, you're also in for a surprise...
