Retention of snapshots is really orthogonal to these changes, but
I think doing so would be a good idea... perhaps the default could
be that we preserve the last N changes, and delete the oldest one.
I was really focusing on the boot environment changes here... but I can
add retention of snapshots as well.
I was focusing on snapshots from the point of view that BE's don't
matter as much as long as you have a snapshot, since beadm can turn a
snapshot into a BE trivially.
We had done some preliminary design for BE snapshot retention policies
in an early version of the design doc[1] but we removed it since it
wasn't fully baked and wasn't an immediate need. I've thought it would
make sense to combine it with the time slider auto-snapshot management
policies, but hadn't tried to sort out a design at all.
