Greetings,
Attached is the 2nd draft for the addition of an on-disk format to
pkg(5). Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated by the end of May
26th, 2010.
For those that saw the first draft, you can find a webrev with
differences here:

Will the p5i format be extended to include support for p5p i.e., a
single web click install of local on-disk packages? I didn't see this
called out explicitly, so may be assumed in the above proposal.
I suppose that's possible although it's a bit more difficult since the
paths to the local on-disk package files will obviously have to be
absolute or assumed to be relative to the directory that the .p5i file
is in.
My current inclination is to ensure that a proper mime type is
registered so that when users double-click a .p5p file, we can launch
the packagemanager to trigger an install of its contents similar to what
happens with .p5i files.
Remember that .p5p package archives can contain multiple packages from
different publishers so you could bundle an application and all of its
dependencies together in one archive.
Cheers,
-Shawn
