You didn't say what errors you were getting?
Either way, if you install
pkg://opensolaris.org/developer/opensolaris/pkg5 you should get the
dependencies you need to build pkg(5).
Here's what's on my system (though I'm using a machine running off an
internal opensolaris/dev repository, so you will have a slightly earlier
version)

http://hub.opensolaris.org/bin/view/Project+pkg/devinfo (some of which
appears to be out of date, unfortunately) as well as keeping up to date
