Having /opt on a separate dataset can work, as we have systems that were
originally installed that way under 2008.05 when we did create that
separate dataset, and they continue to be upgradeable today (I'm writing
this on one of them that's running 151a). However, there's probably some
subtlety of the dataset properties that isn't set up in those who've
done it by hand. We don't consider this a supported configuration at
present because we're not formally testing against it, but as we work to
improve the dataset layout for S11 I'm sure we'll revisit.
There are numerous cases where the package system can and will break if
you have separate datasets for places packages are installed.
As a result, I would strongly discourage against any setup that involves
packages being split across multiple filesystems instead of a single '/'
filesystem.
You may find yourself lucky much of the time simply because packages on
those other filesystems may not change during an upgrade, but as soon as
one of them does, you'll likely find the results are not as you expect.
60+ successful updates on this U24 says I'm just a really lucky guy :-)
