If he's not running pkg from build 164 or newer, that's my first suggestion.
There was a fix for an issue which looks at least broadly similar, so I think
that's the first step. There's a pkg5-nightly repo on ipkg that can be used to
install nightly pkg bits if that helps.

Hi Brock,
I'm happy to say that building this under snv_164 works
cleanly. That's great --- I expect the gate to adopt snv_164
as the build minimum soon, which should simplify my path
to getting this work back.
