Package: evolution
Version: 3.4.4-3
Severity: important

Forwarded-To: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=707235

I have upped the severity because this is effectively a loss of data. However,
something unusual must be required to trigger it because I've used this version
of evolution for several weeks without encountering the problem, and I don't
see other reports of similar problems.

My message list is missing many messages and has also lost the read status for
(apparently) all messages (that, they show as unread). One message marked ToDo
is still so marked.

This happened coincident with my clicking on an open evolution window (not sure
if it was the message list or the main message display). I might have right
clicked, though not intentionally. Before that, everything was fine; after it
was as described above.

Neither restarting evolution nor selecting "display deleted messages" helped.

The message store is IMAP4; the messages are still visible there with mutt.

I assume the local cache for the message index got trashed, but I don't know
how, how to fix it, or what file(s) are involved.

The remote mailbox is running courier-imap 4.1.1.20060828-5 (old Debian). I'm
using imap  with SSL.
The connection is flakey, for unknown, but not evolution-specific, reasons.
There are frequent timeouts on operations. The mailbox has a little under
19,000 messages.

Running under KDE 4.8.4-2.

Silly me. "Show:" was set to "unread messages". Setting it to "all
messages" resolved the problem, at least after I deleted the whole
directory at ~/.cache/evolution/mail/<account> and redownloaded the
mailbox. It seems unlikely that step was necessary, since the problem
persisted after the redownload but was resolved when I switched to "all
messages".

I never intentionally reset the display to "unread messages" and I'm
pretty sure the problem occurred when I clicked in a different area of
the window. But, even if this wasn't just my mistake, it seems like a
more general and obscure GUI problem.

Closing this.
