this patch is not needed. you could change this via config-file or

Well, the default should be something that works well!

no issues here.

While we are speaking about defaults, shouldn't battery (certainly)
and maybe USB modules of openmoko-panel-plugin be enabled by default?

why?
what is so hard in configuring it to your needs?

I would say that battery and GSM signal strength should be active as default.
Why?

Because I/people expect this to be shown on a phone.
At least I do but then again I have only owned a few Nokias.
And if Openmoko is ever going to be used by my mother/brother,
I believe we need to conform to some standards per default.

That said I believe that the (upstream) maintainers of
openmoko-panel-plugin should implement those default values and
not Debian.

please take a look at (it's where we - the maintainers of opp - have our repos currently): https://projects.openmoko.org/plugins/scmsvn/viewcvs.php/trunk/panel- plugin.conf?rev=20&root=panel-plugin&view=markup
here you can clearly see, which plugins are enabled by default.
battery/gsm-plugin are among the by default enabled plugins.
