If you set the device setting to default, and ensure pulseaudio is
running on intrepid, or preferably jaunty, do you get the same behavior
as you would if you set the device to pulse? I.e does the sound play the
same, no crackling, popping etc?

Status in “openal-soft” source package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

Bug description:
Ever since I upgraded to Intrepid, I have been facing an issue with the sound
system, which I have discussed here
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=994172

Editing /etc/openal/alsoft.conf and changing the device value in the section
titled [alsa] as below fixes it (at least for me).

device = pulse

However, it would be easier if the default settings handled this automatically.
