This is fixed in Debian (for the 1.9 branch: http://git.debian.org/?p =pkg-games/wesnoth.git;a=commit;h=d142 commit diff). There is a 1.8.6 release planed for later this month which will include it, and I hope to find the time to suggest this as a stable update.
