If you're frustrated with the above not working, go to Synaptic package manager and install liballegro4.4-plugin-alsa. That is what's missing for this package. If you've got the most recent version of Alex4, leave your .ini file as-is.

Sound is working in other programs however. There are credits when exiting the game for sound fx and music, so I'm fairly certain there should be sound. The game doesn't appear to have any options to change the sound volume so I'm not entirely sure what is going on. The man page doesn't seem to mention any sound options either.
