Unless I’m mistaking what you are talking about, this feature is already
here. Not only can you use the drop-down list of search engines in the
main URL entry, but you can add any bookmark with parameters to any
toolbar.

Personally, I am happy the GNOME foundation isn’t a money machine like
the MoFo.
