Just looked at this one. In principle, I deeply agree with shapefile not being our first choice! However, Mapnik declares ogr or direct osm xml in beta state: https://github.com/mapnik/mapnik/wiki/PluginArchitecture My goal was to make the most simple example possible. And shapefile is the stable, most documented way to get started. I think, in this case the use of the shapefiles helps people, mainly because it is the de-facto standard example for this. It would be nice to add more example sources in general. But I would like to see this as something we can improve on in the future.
