Package: java-package
Version: 0.51~exp1
Severity: minor
File: /usr/bin/make-jpkg
Hallo,
I have manually installed this version of java-package (from
experimental) in my Debian stable environment. to be able to install the
oracle java JDK in a debian way on my machine.
The packages generated by make-jpkg are oracle-java6-jdk (version: 6.38)
and oracle-java7-jdk (version: 7.10). The package names contain only the
major java version numbers, not the build numbers.
Installing those packages results however in the directories
/usr/lib/jvm/jdk-6.38-oracle-x64 and /usr/lib/jvm/jdk-7.10-oracle-x64.
The problem is that every time a new version of the JDK is installed, it
will be installed in a new directory. This means that after every
update, I will have to review and update all the references to the JDK
directory. I case there are a lot of references or a lot of users
defining the directory name in there own profile, an update will result
into a broken system.
My sugestion is to remove the build number from the directory name e.g.:
/usr/lib/jvm/jdk-6-oracle-x64 and /usr/lib/jvm/jdk-7-oracle-x64.
An other option (which I don't like) would be to provide a symbolic link
named /usr/lib/jvm/jdk-6-oracle-x64 to the full directory name.
Regards,
Vincent Smeets
