One other thing to note: if I launch netbeans from a terminal I see a
constant stream of messages like this appearing whilst I work:

'(null)' in cast to 'GObject'
(java:23186): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid uninstantiatable type
'(null)' in cast to 'GObject'
