This version was in Debian for about 3+ years. It was removed before the stretch release because it could not be updated in time for stretch. But now new version is available in buster. This would be helpful to get gitlab to stretch-backports. gitlab in contrib uses this version of npm to install yarn and then uses yarn to install the dependencies. Getting npm 5.8 to stretch-backports is going to be much more work.
