Maybe you should try nave or nvm instead in production. At least that's what I'm doing in several production env. There are some apps needing old node versions and need to be installed on the same machine, so nave is my way to go and I wouldn't install nodejs from Debian, ever. PS1: And now that I'm writing this I may consider packaging nave for Debian. PS2: Please, don't take this email as "nodejs should be removed, is not useful", but as a personal advice based on my experience while using node, very similar to my experience using ruby and gems (never installed debian's gems).
