This problem occurs on Debian Testing.
The problem does not occur on two different Etch systems (Thinkpad T43 and a
Desktop with an IBM UltraNav keyboard).
I have tested this extensively. With the driver
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics-0.14.7~git20070517-2 ksynaptics starts one can
open the config interface but changing settings has the effect that the mouse
acting weird. It jumps all over the display. A tap on the touchpad produces a
right click. A left click produces a right click etc... And most settings
specified in ksynpatics do not get applied. Don't get me wrong I
have sane config values in ksynaptics which worked on other system and other
versions (e.g. Etch, Kubuntu Feisty Fawn). Ditching these working settings and
reconfiguring yields the same result. The only way I can work
around this problem is by downgrading the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics driver
to version 0.14.6-1 (from stable). Using the latest synaptics driver with
stable versions of ksynaptics and libsynaptics0 doesn't work
either. This has been observed on a Thinkpad T43.

The ksynaptics package has been removed from Debian testing, unstable and
experimental, so I am now closing the bugs that were still opened
