I'm sorry but there is no other alternatives available *for KDE*. network-
manager-gnome pulls in a bunch of GNOME libraries which is enough 
controversial by itself for many reasons. wicd is GTK based so it could be an 
option however its look and feel still does not integrate with KDE well. Given 
that knm is good enough in many cases, I don't see a reason for 180 switching. 
By the way, have you tried a knm plasmoid? It's preferred over network-
manager-kde nowadays.
