Ah, I found it, in the README at /usr/share/doc/kio-fuse/README: "The DBus service is automatically used by KIO (5.66+) when opening a file on a KIO URL with a KIO-unaware application." However, it does not seem to appear to be triggered in this way here. I went onto a fish:// directory in Dolphin and told it to open a file with Tea and ScITE as editors, both times I got an empty file, no KIO fuse mount and… no error message in ~/.xsession-errors, however I just recently learned that for DBUS activates services on non systemd as PID 1 systems error messages may go to /dev/null.
