Hi Paul--

I have a jessie system with the exact same versions of the software
described here, and i'm not seeing this behavior. Can you help me to
replicate it?

I haven't seen this message at all. are you certain that gpg-agent is
running? Do you ever see a dialog box that prompts you for your gpg
password?

Can you try adding "use-agent" to your ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf and then
logging out and logging back in again?

As a workaround, please also try closing thunderbird and then
re-launching it with the following command:

    gpg-agent --daemon thunderbird

Does that cause the error message to go away?

If you open up the "Enigmail" menu (from the "hamburger" menu on the
right-hand of the toolbar), and choose "Preferences", and then click
"Display Expert Settings and Menus", then you'll have more debugging
options visible to you.

once you've got that checked, the "Enigmail" menu should have "Debugging
Options" which shows "View Console" and "View Log". can you send some
details from those to this bug report, if they seem safe to publish?
(if they do not seem safe to publish, or you are unsure, but you're OK
sharing them with me, you can encrypt them with key
0EE5BE979282D80B9F7540F1CCD2ED94D21739E9 and e-mail them to me
privately).

I'd also be interested in knowing if you have this problem on a debian
stretch system (the current version of debian stable).

hopefully we can get to the bottom of this!

thanks for persevering,

        --dkg
