Some links relevant to the issue.

WTF, they really use the lame frontend (and rely on specific compile time options for it to work properly) instead of using the shared library which is available for ages?! I hope there is a good reason for this, because losing sndfile support for the frontend is pretty much a pity. It allows for a much wider range of input formats (which has indeed proven usefull for me when trying to convert spurious audio files found on my mobile phone).

The reason Marilat switched back to fileio=lame was AFAICT a bug in reading from stdin with sndfile enabled, which was fixed by the Gentoo patch that I applied in our package.

However, is there a bug report/request against kioslave to switch from the command line frontend to the shared library? Is this KDE3 or KDE4 (I really have no idea about KDE at all)?
