Agreed. I must confess that I blindly stripped without verifying - at the time I thought that my action was to demonstrate _how_ to elegantly strip from source, and then let Hans-Christoph document _why_.

...but I never communicated that :-(

The GSM code is the same as already shipped as a shared library in libgsm1, so indeed it is safe to include with source, but we should not use it but instead link against that shared library.
