I've tried to build vlc against libmatroska in
experimental. Unfortunately, it seems vlc needs some porting to it:

/bin/bash ../../../libtool  --tag=CXX   --mode=compile g++ -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I.
-I../../..   -I../../../include -I../../../include  -DSYS_LINUX
`top_srcdir="../../.." top_builddir="../../.." ../../../vlc-config --cxxflags
plugin libmkv_plugin_la-mkv.lo` -g -O2 -c -o libmkv_plugin_la-mkv.lo `test -f
'mkv.cpp' || echo './'`mkv.cpp
libtool: compile:  g++ -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I../../.. -I../../../include
-I../../../include -DSYS_LINUX -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -D__USE_UNIX98
-DMODULE_NAME_IS_mkv -DMODULE_STRING=\"mkv\" -O2 -ffast-math -funroll-loops
-mtune=pentium2 -fomit-frame-pointer -g -O2 -c mkv.cpp  -fPIC -DPIC -o
