While on it let me suggest an edit: drop this from d/rules:

override_dh_auto_install:
    mkdir -p $(DESTDIR)/usr/bin/ 
    cp -a paulstretch $(DESTDIR)/usr/bin/

and instead use the d/paulstretch.install that you already have.
