Mixing Debian with libraries from external sources is not supported by Debian, and this problem is not limited to blender. Having said that, it is even possible that the only problem in your case was the "remove debian-multimedia from sources years ago": blender was compiled against ffmpeg 3.4, but you had ffmpeg 3.3 libraries still installed. cu Adrian -- "Is there not promise of rain?"
