I dived a bit deeper in the sphinx codebase, and it appears that using a full-fledged JSON parser is actually *cleaner* than what is done now, where dh_sphinxdoc is basically parsing a JSON array manually.
I wrote a patch and posted it on Salsa: https://salsa.debian.org/python- team/packages/sphinx/-/merge_requests/3 I'll wait for feedback from the Debian maintainer before contemplating having it as a delta on Ubuntu.
