Why don't you tell the user what the error message was?!

Hi,

upstream author confirmed that he is not really motivated to change feh
to accomplish this wishlist bug report because the main point of an
image viewer is not to find out reasons why a web server throws 404 and
as long as libcurl does not provide an easy way to do so the effort is
way to high to rectify the extra work.

The bug report is closed (instead of only tagging won't fix) to keep BTS
more clean. If you do not like this, please reopen and tag wontfix.

Kind regards

      Andreas.
