With gphoto2 2.4.14-1 and Wheezy with LXDE I am getting the exact same error and the workaround is the one given above. Except in my case the file manager is PCManFM, which comes with LXDE. In the X display shows up the error and the option to start the FM. Once there the 2 camera files must be unmounted in the left side window of PCManFM. The camera is a Kodak Co. CX4210.
