This doesn't quite answer your question or fix the bug (I'll leave that
to someone more familiar with stable's ruby 1.9.x package)...
I tried building a new version of ruby extension because the one in
debian is broken.
The extension is found here: https://github.com/larskanis/opengl.git.
Broken how? If you mean very outdated, I am working on that right now.
Otherwise, can you file a bug report for ruby-opengl, please?
