After reboot with 215-9 systemd and udev, screen was much darker.
In the KDE system--> display:
Listed as VGA rather than the 1256x1024?
Had to raise the gamma quite a bit to restore screen and/or from display
hardware brightness setting.

This seems like a KDE or xorg issue.
If you can still reproduce the problem on up-to-date sid system, please
file a bug report against KDE.
