A small annoyance: for a few months now, my etch box stops booting at a
particular point, whereupon I must hit any key, and it then completes. I am
not entirely sure, but I think that the last change I made was to install
insserv.

The last messages displayed when the boot stops are usually:

[........]
Jan 25 20:18:42 tpad kernel: ACPI: AC Adapter [AC] (on-line)
Jan 25 20:18:42 tpad kernel: ACPI: CPU0 (power states: C1[C1] C2[C2] C3[C3])
Jan 25 20:18:42 tpad kernel: ACPI: Processor [CPU] (supports 8 throttling
states)
Jan 25 20:18:42 tpad kernel: Time: acpi_pm clocksource has been installed.
Jan 25 20:18:42 tpad kernel: ACPI: Power Button (FF) [PWRF]
Jan 25 20:18:42 tpad kernel: ACPI: Lid Switch [LID]
Jan 25 20:18:42 tpad kernel: ACPI: Sleep Button (CM) [SLPB]
Jan 25 20:18:42 tpad kernel: ACPI: Thermal Zone [THM0] (27 C)

After I hit any key, these messages appear next, and booting concludes
normally:

Jan 25 20:18:42 tpad kernel: e100: ethernet: e100_watchdog: link up, 100Mbps,
full-duplex
Jan 25 20:18:42 tpad kernel: NET: Registered protocol family 10
Jan 25 20:18:42 tpad kernel: lo: Disabled Privacy Extensions
Jan 25 20:18:42 tpad kernel: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wireless: link is not ready
Jan 25 20:18:42 tpad kernel: IPv6 over IPv4 tunneling driver
Jan 25 20:18:42 tpad ifplugd.agent[3331]: Invoking ifplugd for sit0
Jan 25 20:18:42 tpad kernel: sit0: Disabled Privacy Extensions
Jan 25 20:18:46 tpad dhcdbd: Started up.
Jan 25 20:18:47 tpad kernel: Capability LSM initialized
[......]

Sometimes there is a difference of a line or two from what is shown above.

Does anyone know how I might go about diagnosing this further, for example,
how to
determine what the key press is triggering which allows the boot to continue,
or
which service is stalling?

Regards,

John

Changes:

 .
   * Rewrite conffile removal code in initscripts.preinst to use the
original *.dpkg-old and not the *.dpkg-bak introduced by mistake
     when changing to use dpkg-query.
   * New patch 83_killall_manref to add references between killall5 and
pidof, and mention pidof in killall5(8) (Closes: #461160).
   * Improve documentation for the CONCURRENCY option in /etc/init.d/rc
     (Closes: #408491).
   * New patch 93_sulogin_fallback to let sulogin fall back to the
staticly linked /bin/sash if both roots shell and /bin/sh fail to
execute. Add suggests for sysvinit-utils to sah, for those that
want this extra level of redundancy (Closes: #43317).
