Hello again! I just upgraded to the recommended dependency boot system. The result: Still multiple rc runs; but this time, checkfs went into trouble because it stumbles over already mounted filesystems, and then aborts the boot process by calling single user mode.
It asks to check manually, which is not possible because the already mounted filesystems (like /var) can not be unmounted, not even with -f. So i had no choice but to remove the checkfs sysmlink, temporarily. Here's a movie of my boot process I cut out the grub part, and downsampled it to 15fps (it's only half speed) to ease stoppinng at interesting points. You can try the "HQ" button (bottom player bar) and open the player in a new window with the arrow button in the top player bar, to see a larger version. The file is 35M, in case you like to download (firefox addon: DownloadHelper). Besides that redundant processes run parallel now (instead of one-after-the-other) there's nothing substantial new. You can see, for example, bootlogd starting and stopping twice, not one after the other but parallel. The problem is that a complete reinstall would require some weeks because i have a complex system (see /etc/fstab) and can i be sure that the bug will not be there again ? It's just that i find it on my laptop, too, with the same Debian but it's a 32bit Intel (while the tracked box is amd64). Bot boxes are dual-core. My best guess, at this time, is that it's maybe a kernel SMP (dual-core) bug ?? I know it sounds unbelievable. But would you please check on your box if that's really ok that so many kernel processes are launched twice on this 2 dual-core computers ? (see attached process list, and kern.log). Just that i know i don't need to write to kernel developers too. It does not make any difference if i launch kernel 2.6.30 or 2.6.26 from stable. I'll see if i can find it on other peoples' computer too.
