Wouldn't solution 2 be viable? You can leave the "-i" as default but everyone 
who is experiencing problems can make persistent modifications.

There is indeed probably another problem involved.

If you tell me how, I can try. At this point I cannot even do anything in the 
serial console of the VMs and the "real" maschines.
